Whispers from my Muse - "A Family Matter"

February 25th, 2006 (02:33 pm)

"Wythdantis nal Anton, do you know how to fly?" Her back was to me as I said it, and she was very careful as she slowly turned around to face me again.

"No, that is not a skill I possess."

I looked at her for a moment, my hands steepled in front of me as I sat there in my chair. "Then I suggest that you refrain from questioning the honor of my family or I will personally throw your ass off the top of this mountain for your first lesson. You knew when you encouraged Kalindra to chase me that there was a risk involved, I'm tired of being the dumping ground for your desire to pretend you don't share the responsibility for the results." Just for an instant she started to snarl and just as quickly my hands started glowing softly, which faded as she got control of herself.

"You were the one that took your already wounded mate into a 'Bar' and risked her life just to get involved in a senseless fight," she said tightly as her eyes kept darting between mine and my hands. "That is not an honorable act."

"It is in this family, especially when it was her idea in the first place. You know damn well that our blending has let her become the first Velan in over five thousand years who can actually get angry for a reason other than insanity. She's still got the genetic safeguards to prevent her from reacting that way to another Velan, but these were Humans, Humans that were celebrating having shot her. They're damn lucky she only went after them physically."

"And is your daughter going to have those same safeguards? Are you going to be responsible for undoing millennia of peace on my world?"

I almost laughed, "You tell me, you're her paternal grandmother, how unstable are you?" Reaching to my neck, I pulled a small locket from under my shirt and then over my head so I could flip it to Wythdantis. "You'll find fur and other samples from five different Velans locked in that, the five I chose to become the core Velan DNA when I shapechange. You're in there, and you're part of my daughters heritage, just as there is a little Human DNA left in the mix from me." Even as she caught it, I took a deep breath and in the time it took me to exhale, I shifted into what was now my Velan equivalent form, all the way to the genetic level.

Holding the locket in one paw, her eyes widening in surprise as she caught my scent, she stared at me in silence. "I am truly the Klizan of this family now, and I'll warn you again. Do not question the honor of my family or my mate unless you are prepared to answer to me."

I had to read this a few times over before I remembered the final Scene in the last file where Brian and Kalindra find the rednecks that shot her in a bar.

I take it then that Wythdantis has a problem with Kalindra geting violent then...

I should re-read the whole thing over again... it's been a while since the last time I read it :)

Family Nas-Kan

Wythdantis having a problem with a Velan Mage who can get angry is putting it mildly. Since the time of the founding of the Velan Central Library and the start of what the Velan's consider their modern age, the healers have retained the knowledge about the why Velans don't get angry with each other while pretty much everybody else has forgotten or never knew in the first place. I stumbled across the knowledge because I kept getting my ass kicked by Kalindra, the supposidly non-violent Velan and decided to find out why.

Wythdantis is going to have a royal fit when she figures out that my Velan form doesn't include the genetic safeguard against anger, and my daughter might not have it either, I haven't decided yet how that should play out.

Kalindra will never get angry with another Velan, that's not a subject I want to explore. Because of our blending though, she can and will get angry with anybody else that doesn't happen to smell right, especially when it concerns a threat to the family.

That's enough to scare Wythdantis silly and I'm a handy target to blame.

Cat Black General Rosycat

The scene with Wythdantis rings true to me :)

I'm glad the Mage found a way to be a "proper Klizan" in Velan Society. Being "not-quite" isn't pleasant, to put it mildly.

ps Good for him for standing up to his mother-in-law-equivalent *g* :)

It is very certainly a strange situation. Both Kalindra and Brian understand that she's becomeing more violent as he does the opposite. They started out on the far end of the bell curve and are meeting in the middle because of they way they've blended.

Blended or not though, neither of them takes crap from others where their family is concerned. That is one of the reoccuring themes of the "A Family Matter" story, as will be shown again in the next snippet I write.

They are five people with entire worlds vying to see who can get rid of them first. They've put up with all of that then intend to and they both figure it's time to remind their enemies just how dangerous it is to get a Mage angry.

Especially since they don't smell right to Kalindra and she's easier to annoy now ... :)

Has anybody wondered where that asteroid that didn't hit Meenzell ended up being aimed??? :)
